Open calls 〰️
Based in Los Angeles, Factory Settings covers things worth seeing, buying, doing, and reconsidering.
Some of what we publish, we go out and find ourselves. Our wonderful team of unpaid editors and contributors is growing but still small, and there are undoubtedly many things worth covering that may not be on our radar yet. That’s where you come in. Clue us in to what we’re missing but should really be paying attention to.
Below is our running list of current open calls. You’ll find they span a range of topics, formats, and involvement—some can be answered in a couple of words in under a couple minutes, while others provide broader thematic guidelines for anyone who’d rather have a direction than an explicit assignment. We encourage you to reply to any and all that speak to you.
And, if you’re interested in contributing, but nothing listed below at the moment particularly strikes your fancy, go ahead and pitch us your idea anyway. Often, some of the most interesting topics are the ones we didn’t know to ask for.
Full disclosure. While all contributions are unpaid, we can offer you a byline, plus real, hands-on, human editing and distribution across the site, the newsletter, Instagram, and, occasionally, in print. Though Factory Settings is still within its first year and currently operating as an unfunded, nonprofit publication (any revenue we generate goes straight into covering operating costs), we hope to eventually roll out paid contributions once we’re able. Once this changes, those on the masthead will know first, followed by repeat contributors.
Drop us a line. Send submissions, thoughts, or questions to editor@factorysettingsmag.com. A few sentences about what you want to make beats a finished draft—we’d love to help build with you.
