Beyond the Velvet Rope

A glimpse inside Bhindi Jewelers’ 9,500-square-foot “Timepiece Haven” at The Americana at Brand, where high jewelry, luxury hospitality, and experiential design signal a vibrant new era for West Coast retail.
There was a time when attending a store opening in Los Angeles meant shuffling past a velvet rope, accepting a glass of lukewarm prosecco, and watching a celebrity pose for three minutes before everyone quietly making your way to the valet. But stepping through the doors at the grand opening of Bhindi Jewelers’ new flagship at The Americana at Brand in Glendale last week, it was immediately clear how drastically our local, luxury retail landscape has shifted. The event was extremely eye-opening as it showed me how high-end store launches in Los Angeles have evolved into fully immersive, hospitality-driven cultural events conceptualized to make guests linger and explore, and I’m all for it.

Moreover, as a journalist who only moved from India to the United States a few years ago, attending the evening carried a deeply personal resonance for me. Watching a third-generation South Asian family business command such an extraordinary presence in one of Southern California’s premier shopping destinations filled me with immense pride. Seeing heritage, craftsmanship, and modern West Coast luxury melt together on this scale felt like a milestone not just for the brand, but for the Indian-American community’s growing footprint in the global luxury space.
Walking into the sprawling 9,500-square-foot boutique, conceived by Studio Tonic as a contemporary “Timepiece Haven,” the space felt far more like an elegant hotel than a traditional retail showroom. The interiors wrap around guests in warm European oak, natural stone, bronze finishes, and deeply tactile, layered textures. Rather than feeling pushed toward standard glass display cases, I found myself walking through a series of residential-style spaces: dedicated watch environments, jewelry presentation alcoves, intimate lounge nooks, and private VIP suites built specifically for discovery and conversation.

The evening kicked off with a ribbon-cutting hosted by the Bhindi family alongside Rick Caruso, Founder and Executive Chairman of Caruso, Glendale Mayor Ardy Kassakhian, and Police Chief Robert William. As champagne circulated, I moved through the crowds alongside a mix of L.A.’s entertainment, cultural, and fashion figures, including Mario Lopez, Raymond Lee, Roselyn Sanchez, and Eric Winter.
Guests explored stunning pieces from world-class maisons like Rolex, Cartier, Tudor, Bvlgari, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Grand Seiko, Gerald Charles, Zenith, Laurent Ferrier, and TAG Heuer. We were treated to delicious craft cocktails, curated bite-sized culinary offerings, and live entertainment (including acrobatic dancers, a harpist, and a brilliant magician!). The launch blurred the boundaries between fine jewelry shopping and an immersive cultural event.

Bhindi Jewelers is a third-generation, family-owned business retailing fine jewelry and luxury timepieces. Established in 1959 by Karsanji Bhindi in Suva, Fiji, the brand has evolved across generations and continents while maintaining a commitment to exquisite artistry, quality and thoughtful hospitality. Presently, Bhindi has outposts in Southern California, the San Francisco Bay Area and Atlanta.
For the family-owned business, the move marks a triumphant evolution, relocating from its long-standing footprint at the Glendale Galleria to a vastly expanded, experience-first sanctuary across the street. “This opening represents much more than a new store—it is the next chapter of a family business built on relationships across generations,” said Ashwin Bhindi, Chief Marketing Officer of Bhindi Jewelers. “Celebrating this milestone surrounded by clients, friends and partners who have been part of our journey made the evening especially meaningful. We look forward to welcoming both longtime and new clients into our new home at The Americana.”
In a time where contemporary luxury consumers demand authentic connection and sensory engagement over transactional shopping, Bhindi Jewelers’ new flagship is an excellent instance of where West Coast retail is headed. The event proves that when deep heritage and warm hospitality take center stage, the store itself becomes the destination, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
